Montes Andinos Birding Tour: An Epic Encounter with the Banded Ground-Cuckoo
During a birdwatching trip in the lush forests of western Colombia, alongside a great English adventurer, we experienced a moment that will forever remain in our memories: our group’s first sighting (Lifer) of the elusive Banded Ground-Cuckoo (Neomorphus radiolosus).
This journey had already been an adventure filled with excitement, featuring sightings of exotic birds such as toucans, antpittas, tanagers, and a long-time nemesis for our English friend: the Tiny Hawk, which had remained elusive for him throughout his global travels. However, the Banded Ground-Cuckoo, known for its shy nature and preference for the forest floor, was still a distant dream for any birder. After days of hiking through challenging terrain, the long-awaited moment finally arrived.
When Nature Surprises Us
Some of the best experiences come when we least expect them. That morning, as golden sunlight filtered through the treetops and the forest awakened to a new day, we had no idea that we were about to witness a once-in-a-lifetime moment.
Our initial goal was to record another elusive bird restricted to this bioregion, the Chocó Screech-Owl (Megascops centralis). Our local guide, Yamid, ventured to a known site for this owl while I (Oswaldo) and our English companion waited for his signal.
Unfortunately, the individual that had frequented the area in previous days was nowhere to be found.
But nature had other plans...
That day, our expectations for bird activity were low due to the crowds
and noise of a national holiday, as people visited the area’s natural
pools. We thought it was the worst scenario for trying to spot such a secretive
species.
As we made our way back along the dense forest trail, an intriguing sound caught our attention. At first, I thought it was the snapping noise of a Golden-collared Manakin (Manacus vitellinus) lek. But when I looked up, I saw a large shadow cross in front of us, less than five meters away.
Our hearts racing, we crouched in silence. Then, as if out of a dream, the Banded
Ground-Cuckoo appeared in all its splendor.
A stunning male, with black and white feathers shimmering in the morning light, stood before us—a phantom of the forest made real. Even more astonishingly, it was perched over two meters high, an unusual behavior for a species typically seen on the ground, foraging near swarms of army ants.
A nearly utopian dream had just come true!

For our group, this was not just a moment of celebration but also a powerful reminder of the fragility of this critically endangered species.
The Banded Ground-Cuckoo, whose population is severely threatened by deforestation and habitat loss, stands as a symbol of Colombia’s natural wealth and the urgent need for conservation.
This historic and unforgettable sighting was more than just birdwatching—it was a deep connection with nature and a reminder of why we must protect biodiversity, one of the greatest treasures of our region.
